On a daily basis, students and faculty see handfuls of University staff members cooking meals and cleaning restrooms.
In the Patuxent Lounge of the University Union, the Black Student Union hosted their first dinner for the custodial and cooking staff in appreciation of their work on Friday.
Beginning at 4 p.m. and continuing through the evening, workers could stop in Patuxent for a complimentary meal provided by BSU.
According to members, it was much needed because of the lack of appreciation from students on campus.
“I did not feel that everyone on campus was appreciative of the services the custodians and cooks provide for them,” sophomore family studies major and BSU social events chair Billie Shabazz said.
Students who attended the event placed blame on the students living in the residence halls for their lack of appreciation. Nonetheless, the dinner remained overwhelmingly positive.
“I feel appreciated without a shadow of a doubt,” Paws cook Ted Lee said.
“Regardless of whether we are given a dinner, I still have a job to do. At the end of the day I will still give out the best service because when I go out to eat I would want to see someone go out of their way for me.” BSU plans to continue this event next semester in hopes that more organizations will follow in having events to appreciate the workers on campus.
